Reece James faces around three months out after knee surgery, Chelsea confirm operation
Chelsea say their captain has had successful minor knee surgery. BBC Sport and The Athletic report a three-month absence, which could see him back in mid-January.

Chelsea captain Reece James is expected to miss about three months after undergoing knee surgery, a blow that leaves the club without their leader for the busiest stretch of the season.
Chelsea confirmed the operation in a brief statement. "Captain Reece James has undergone successful minor knee surgery," the club said, adding that medical assessments had confirmed surgery was required.
The club said James was injured in training before the 5-1 victory over Bournemouth, and that he had already begun his road to recovery with the support of the medical department at Cobham.
How long will he be out?
Chelsea's statement did not put a date on his return, and BBC Sport reported that no specific return time-frame had been given by the club. But BBC Sport and The Athletic both reported that the 26-year-old is set to miss around three months of action.
The Athletic reported that the recovery timeline could see James return in mid-January.
Xabi Alonso would not be drawn on a fixed period. "We don't give timelines," he told ESPN. "It won't be short, it will be a few weeks. We will see before Christmas, after Christmas, we will see."
Speaking to BBC Sport, he was clear that this is not a short-term problem. "It's not going to be a two or three-week thing, it's going to be longer and after that we will see."
That leaves a gap between the club's careful wording and the three-month figure reported elsewhere, though Alonso's own remarks point to an absence running well beyond the next few weeks.
A captain missed on and off the pitch
James had already been out of the side before the surgery was confirmed. BBC Sport reported that he missed the Bournemouth win while medical assessments took place, and ESPN reported that he had been absent from Chelsea's last two Premier League matches, against Brentford and Bournemouth.
According to ESPN, James has played six games for Chelsea this season and has not featured since 12 September.
Alonso made no attempt to play down the loss. "We are all disappointed, especially for him," he told ESPN. "In the last training session, he picked up an injury. He will be close to the team and he is a great influence. We wish him a good recovery."
The phrase "close to the team" is telling. Even sidelined, James is expected to remain part of the group around the squad, and Alonso clearly values that presence. But influence from the treatment room is no substitute for a captain on the pitch, and if the three-month estimate holds, Chelsea will be without him through the whole of the festive programme and into the new year.
The timing stings for a side that has started reasonably. After six games, Chelsea were sixth in the Premier League, according to ESPN, and the 5-1 win over Bournemouth suggested a team finding some rhythm without him. Keeping that up for the length of his absence is a different test.
What comes next
There is at least some encouragement in the club's language. The surgery was described as successful and minor, and Chelsea stressed that his recovery had already begun. If The Athletic's mid-January projection proves accurate, he would be back for the second half of the campaign.
In the meantime, Chelsea must get on with it. Their next assignment is away at Everton on Saturday, according to ESPN, the first of what could be many games they will have to navigate before their captain pulls the shirt back on.
