Sunderland stun Chelsea 1-0 as Le Fée penalty knocks Blues out of top four
Enzo Le Fée's first-half spot kick gave the Premier League's bottom side a first league win since August and left Xabi Alonso's Chelsea fifth going into the international break.

Sunderland beat Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday 8 November 2026, a result that lifted the home side off the bottom of the Premier League and dropped Xabi Alonso's team out of the top four.
Enzo Le Fée scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Levi Colwill brought down Brian Brobbey in the area. Le Fée sent his kick into the bottom-left corner past Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, and Chelsea never found a way back.
It was a damaging afternoon for the visitors. ESPN reported that the defeat was Chelsea's fourth in the league this season, and Chelsea's own match report confirmed the club would enter the final international break of 2026 in fifth place.
A penalty at one end, not at the other
The game turned on two incidents in the box. Sky Sports reported that Cole Palmer's first-half penalty appeal was rejected after VAR determined the contact was outside the area. At the other end, Colwill's challenge on Brobbey gave Sunderland a penalty of their own.
Colwill did not reappear for the second half. NBC Sports reported that Chelsea withdrew him at the interval, having conceded the penalty and picked up a booking.
Chelsea had most of the ball after the break but, according to ESPN, struggled to turn possession into chances. In stoppage time, substitute Danny Welbeck headed over the bar.
Alonso did not hide his frustration with the goal. "I'm not happy with how we have defended that situation," he told Sky Sports. "It's something we could avoid and something we have worked on during the week."
He rejected the idea that his side had been overpowered. "Not bullied," he said. "I would say these were situations where we could have defended better. Situations that we could have got better advantages in attack."
On the attacking problems, Alonso told Chelsea's official website: "We were against a low block. We missed a bit of patience and a bit of quality, creativity in the last third to create more chances." He added to Sky Sports: "The first goal is always important and today being behind, we didn't produce enough."
Relief for Le Bris
For Sunderland, this was a win that had been a long time coming. ESPN reported that it ended a Premier League winless run stretching back to their victory over Fulham in August. NBC Sports put the date of that previous win at 30 August 2026 and noted this was only their second league victory of the season.
The context made it all the more striking. Chelsea's own preview had noted that Sunderland had lost five of their previous six league matches, drawing the other, and were two points from safety before kick-off. Three days earlier, on Thursday 5 November, they had lost 2-0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.
