Manchester United's season sank further on Saturday 31 October 2026 as they lost 2-0 at Chelsea, a result that stretched their winless run to nine matches in all competitions and threw Michael Carrick's position into fresh doubt, according to ESPN.
Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored the goals at Stamford Bridge, both in a second half in which Lisandro Martínez was also sent off. Sky Sports reported that the nine-match run is United's longest since 1984.
BBC Sport reported that the defeat was United's fourth in the Premier League this season and left them 16th, one point above the relegation zone. ESPN put their tally at seven points from nine games and said the numbers were raising concerns that the club could be drawn into a relegation battle.
A first half that promised more
The scoreline does not tell the whole story of the opening 45 minutes. ESPN reported that United had chances to take the lead before the break, while Matheus Cunha and Estêvão both had goals disallowed for offside.
Sky Sports reported that Bruno Fernandes fired over from a Bryan Mbeumo cross and that Amad Diallo was twice denied by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders. Fernandes was back in the starting XI after being dropped for the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on Saturday 24 October, having criticised Carrick's tactics after the loss at Como, according to ESPN.
Then the game turned. In the 50th minute Rogers dribbled through the United defence and lifted his finish over Senne Lammens, ESPN reported.
Fourteen minutes later Palmer scored from the penalty spot. ESPN reported that the spot-kick was awarded after a VAR review found Martínez's elbow had made contact with Wesley Fofana during a Chelsea corner. Sky Sports reported that Martínez had already been booked for fouling Rogers and was shown a second yellow for raising an arm to Fofana's face inside the United penalty area. The two cautions came three minutes and 30 seconds apart, according to ESPN.
Sky Sports noted that Palmer's penalty was his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, scored in his 105th appearance. Penders preserved the clean sheet in injury time by tipping a Mbeumo effort onto the bar.
The numbers against Carrick
Carrick insisted the first half showed what his team could do. "We didn't get going second half. We should've been up in the first half. Everything was as positive as we could've hoped for. We looked really dangerous."
He added: "We found a way of unravelling in the second half. Bad goal to concede and then the penalty, we're right up against it. The game turned on its head."
