Everton beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park on Monday 2 November, Thierno Barry's 49th-minute goal lifting them to seventh in the Premier League and deepening the pressure on Matthias Jaissle, whose side have now lost four of their past five matches in all competitions.
It was the second time in five days that Everton had beaten Newcastle. Four days earlier they had knocked them out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 victory in the fourth round, and NBC Sports noted that Monday's result completed a cup-and-league double over the same opponents.
For Newcastle, the night ended in boos. BSS/AFP reported that Jaissle and his players were booed at half-time and again after the final whistle, in front of an attendance ESPN put at 52,279. BSS/AFP also noted that Newcastle registered their first shot on target only after 86 minutes, when Yoane Wissa's effort was saved routinely by Jordan Pickford.
The goal
The decisive moment came four minutes into the second half. Tyrique George's shot went underneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Hornícek, and Barry was on hand to tap in, according to ESPN.
There was a wait before Everton could celebrate properly. The goal went to a VAR check for two close offside calls, but it stood.
There is some disagreement over Barry's tally. NBC Sports counted the goal as his fourth of the season, while BSS/AFP put it at eight, including four in his last six matches. Either way, the striker is in form, and he is making a point of enjoying it.
"Like I said, I want to enjoy it more than last season. I enjoy my celebrations," Barry told NBC Sports.
James Tarkowski has been working on his team-mate's confidence. "He's harsh on himself at times and I'm trying to praise him up. His numbers are good for distance, holding the ball, and getting in the box plus the important one of scoring goals," Tarkowski told NBC Sports.
Tarkowski was also clear about the standard of the display. "Probably our best of the season to be honest. Could've scored 2 or 3 in the first half and finally scored in the second."
Newcastle did hit the woodwork. BSS/AFP reported that Anthony Elanga's close-range shot clipped the post and rolled along the goal line before Everton cleared it. The hosts' frustration then boiled over late on, when substitute Jacob Ramsey was shown two yellow cards in quick succession at the end of the game, leaving Newcastle to finish with 10 men.
What it means for both clubs
For Everton, the win ends a three-game winless run in the league, which had included successive defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea. BSS/AFP reported it was their first away league win since 28 February, when they also took three points at Newcastle. NBC Sports has Everton on 13 points in seventh, six places and two points clear of Newcastle, who slipped to 13th.
